The year was 2020 and as the global pandemic forced restaurants, cafes and market food vendors to stop serving patrons as dine-in and shifted to takeaway only, also known as dark kitchens. King Pack was using traditional distribution channels at the time, but needed to pivot their business quickly to better serve these food establishments which their current operations model didn’t allow. They needed a better way to reach and service these new customers, and fast.

Challenge
King Pack had no prior e-commerce store and was venturing into online sales for the first time. They required a new brand identity and an immersive shopping experience. Guidance was needed on e-commerce logistics and fulfilment, including shipping rules and rates, and return policies. They were unsure how to set budgets and run online marketing campaigns. Like many businesses, they understood their market, products, and customers well but needed support in using e-commerce tools and a guide to getting started on selling DTC via online and other channels (omnichannel selling).
Solution
We developed a best-in-class e-commerce store on WordPress using WooCommerce, incorporating precise targeting product and collection data enrichment strategies to boost both organic & paid traffic surfacing at the top of Google—helping customers find their products.
To ensure the store looked polished, professional, and optimised for sales, we customised it according to their preferences, refining layouts, colours, and typography for an immersive user experience.
Building on the base Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) done, we automated a Google Shopping feed with a powerful AI Automation with Kliken. In addition, we ran a dynamic Google text and Display Network ads to further reach new shoppers and remarketing to past visitors.
To support lead generation, we set up features for handling enquiries related to bulk order discounts and custom branding.
We also developed a customer database for direct marketing, integrating Mailchimp to run effective email campaigns.
Additionally, we configured the Payfast payment gateway, providing a secure and efficient online payment solution tailored for South Africa.
Within the Google Ecosystem, we set up Google Workspace for professional emails and other organisational tools. We enhanced their Google Maps listing, which led to increased in-store customer traffic.
Finally, we integrated Google Analytics and Search Console to deliver accurate insights, enabling improved reporting and better decision-making.
Results
We successfully launched a new e-commerce business in a matter of months, getting the first order under 24hrs post store activation. It rapidly grew to new markets they had never reached before, servicing small to large food and coffee establishments across South Africa and now even expanding further into Southern Africa.
The automations setup also allowed them to scale their business fast, efficiently and without having to increase fixed costs as the business grew further increasing profitability.
They also experienced an improved cash flow position as a result of collecting payments from online orders in advance before fulfilment occurs, compared to their previous distribution model which sold to large national retailers who would demand extremely long payment terms in order to do business with them – a practice they have ultimately pivoted away from.
